PHYSICIANS CREATING THE BEST ENVIRONMENT IN WHICH TO CARE FOR PATIENTS!!

Community physicians created the Portland Medical Society (now the Medical Society of Metropolitan Portland) on June 10, 1884. The goal was noble and clear: to promote the art and science of medicine and the betterment of public health. The provision of quality, competent and compassionate medical care to the person sitting (or otherwise positioned) in front of the physician was the immediate objective, as well as the development of a better understanding of the biological, psychological, environmental, and unique circumstances that each distinctive patient presented.

Today, physicians have the advantage of antibiotics, the scientific method, evidence, and the many other advances of modern medicine (CT, MRI, etc., etc.).

The objective remains the same: to help the unique person before the physician.

We are: 

PHYSICIANS CREATING THE BEST ENVIRONMENT IN WHICH TO CARE FOR PATIENTS!!


The following articulates the ends to be achieved by the Medical Society of Metropolitan:

1.0   GLOBAL ENDS STATEMENT:  MSMP exists for creating the best environment in which physicians may use their professional knowledge, skill, judgment and compassion in the care of patients, within the framework of accepted professional standards.

 

1.1       MSMP members practice in accordance with the Principles of Medical Ethics of the American Medical Association.

 

1.2       Physicians have knowledge and resources necessary for successful practice.

 

A.  Physicians are knowledgeable of relevant political, regulatory, social, economic and scientific issues affecting medical practice.

 

B. Physicians have access to high quality practice support services.

 

1.3     There is an effective voice for metropolitan area physicians on issues pertaining to the practice, science, and art of medicine and community health.

 

A. The general community recognizes the Society as an accurate, reliable and consistent resource for the provision of health-care related information.

 

A.  Physicians play an active leadership role in the affairs of the profession and the community.

 

B.  Physicians have opportunities and tools necessary to develop and exercise leadership skills.

 

C.  (SHORT-TERM PRIORITY #1) There is physician leadership in development of a regional health preparedness plan for the Portland metropolitan area.

 

D. (SHORT-TERM PRIORITY #2) There is growth in physician provision of pro-bono services to low-income uninsured people.

 

1.5       Public policy is favorable to the needs of the profession. 

 

C.   Impediments to the physician-patient relationship are minimized.
